International driver’s license for U.S. citizens
Are you a U.S. citizen planning to drive while traveling abroad? Find out if you need an International Driving Permit (IDP) for the country you are visiting.
Know what an International Driving Permit (IDP) is and if you need one
An International Driving Permit (IDP), sometimes known as an international driver's license, allows you to drive legally in another country. An IDP translates your identifying information into different languages.
U.S. citizens visiting Canada and Mexico don't need an IDP to drive. But U.S. citizens visiting many countries must have an IDP.
Use the Department of State's website to search for the country you will be visiting. On that country’s page, see the transportation for the destination’s driver’s license rules.
How to get and use an International Driving Permit
There are two official organizations authorized by the U.S. Department of State to issue IDPs:
- American Automobile Association (AAA). Learn how to apply for an IDP online, in person, or by mail through AAA.
- American Automobile Touring Alliance (AATA). Complete the AATA application online with a passport photo and U.S. driver's license.
While visiting another country, carry both your IDP and driver’s license. An IDP is valid for one year and cannot be renewed.
Beware of other websites that claim to issue international driver’s licenses or IDPs. Many are fraudulent and may try to scam you out of money or personal information.
